Report on Town Mayor's EventsThe Town Mayor was delighted to welcome members of other youth councils within the District to a Braunstone Town Youth Council event. It was an opportunity for other groups to see what work the Braunstone Town Youth Council does. Youth Council Event - 20th May 2008
Veterans' Day ShowOver 160 people attended a Veteran's Day show at Braunstone Civic Centre on Friday 27th June. Erin Parker entertained the audience with her tribute to Vera Lynn, Gracie Fields, the Andrews Sisters plus many more. Erin was also accompanied by the Ratby Co-operative Mid Band who played a selection of music from the 1940's and more modern tunes. The Royal Air Force Association and the Royal British Legion organised a raffle with the proceeds from the raffle and the show being donated to the Town Mayor's Charity - Help For Heroes. ![]() Braunstone Town Mayor and singer, Erin Parker Visit to Highcross, Leicester City![]() All kitted out for a tour of the Highcross Shopping Centre Mrs Thurman was delighted to represent the Town Council at a sneak preview of the new Highcross Shopping Centre in the City Centre on 1st August. The Town Council had allowed the Highcross developers to host a series of recruitment events for local people at the Braunstone Civic Centre. Mrs Thurman looked forward to seeing the centre opened in September. Presentation of Community Grant ChequesBraunstone Town Mayor, Mrs Sharleen Thurman, was pleased to present Community Grant cheques to residents of Radford House in the sum of £250. The grant will be put toward the cost of transport for social trips out. Mrs Thurman is seen here with members of the Radford House Committee. Mrs Thurman then visited the Asian Elderly Group that meets weekly at Braunstone Civic Centre. The grant of £170 presented to the group will help pay for day trips, weekly supplies, stationery and transport for the housebound Mrs Thurman presented a cheque to members of the group
Allotment Society Open Day![]() David Widdowson presenting prizes to Allotment Holders On Saturday 16th August the Deputy Town Mayor, David Widdowson, presented prizes of winners at the Allotment Society's Annual Open Day. Prizes were for the best allotment, best new comer and best scarecrow. The event was well attended, particular with people who were keen to find information out on taking on an allotment. Tea with the SWAGAT Group![]() Mrs Thurman with members of the SWAGAT Group Mrs Thurman was delighted to host tea with SWAGAT, a local community group which meets at the Civic Centre on a Thursday morning. It gave the Town Mayor the opportunity to get to know members of the Group and hear about what activities the group gets up to, including keep fit lessons, outings and guest speakers. There are around 40 regular members of the group. Mrs Thurman also took the opportunity to talk about her charity and was delighted when the group made a presentation towards her charity. Tea with the Monday Friendly ClubMrs Thurman was made very welcome by the Monday Friendly Club when she joined them for a 'Tea with the Town Mayor' on 22nd September. The Group enjoyed tea and cakes, a game of bingo, and a raffle. Mrs Thurman was delighted that when the Group presented her with a cheque for £25 towards her charity, Hope for Heroes. The Group has now been running for many years and meets each week on a Monday afternoon at the Civic Centre. They also have guest speakers and arrange trips out and meals.

The event gave the Royal Navy an opportunity to explain their role, including protecting ports and waterways, sea rescue, protecting shipping against pirates and illegal fishing. Battle of Britain DayOn 21st September the Town Mayor attended the Battle of Britain Day celebrations at London Road. The weather was glorious and the service men and women looked smart and wore their medals. On 14th November the Deputy Town Mayor, Mr David Widdowson, attending the 'Happy Christmas' Flower Demonstration. Tony Brown provided an entertaining, colourful and inspring flower demonstration.
ROYAL FESTIVAL OF REMEMBRANCEOn 1st November the Town Mayor was delighted to have attended the Festival of Remembrance hosted by the Royal Air Forces Association at De Montfort Hall.
