Leicestershire County Council - Translation and Interpretation Service

Leicestershire County Council has launched a Translation and Interpretation Service which is now available from the Civic Centre.
Over 20,000 people in Leicestershire are from different ethnic minorities and many of them speak languages other than English. In the context of the County Council's Better Access to Services Initiative and the Race Equality Scheme it is essential that people who want to access the County Council services are able to communicate easily to staff.
Arrangements for interpreting and translating are made through the Public Relations Unit and can be obtained through the Unit's Language Co-ordinator. Interpreters may be booked to visit service users to help officers communicate with them and any written translation work can also be arranged and provided.
In order to enhance this service furher, the County Council will be using services of telephone interpreting compnay Language Line - to provide immediate interpretation services in those instances where members of the public who do not speak English visit County Council reception areas or outlets and try to communicate with staff. This service could also be used in situations where non-English speakers telephone the County Council or, if interpreters are required to speak languages other than those available via the Council's interpreting service.
