Draft East Midlands Regional Plan AmendedBraunstone Town Council lodged an objection in 2006 to the following wording contained in the Draft Regional Plan:- Witness Appeal after Robbery near Fosse ParkPolice are appealing for witnesses after a woman was robbed near Fosse Park. The incident happened on Monday, November 26 between 5.30pm and 6pm in Everards Way. The 17-year-old victim was approached by a man who punched her in the face before making off with her handbag, which contained her wallet and mobile phone. The victim sustained bruising to her face. The man is described as being white with a deep Leicester accent and was wearing dark clothing. He ran off in the direction of Argos. PC Darren Measures, from Blaby local policing unit said: "This incident happened on a Monday evening when I am sure there would have been a lot of people in the area doing their Christmas shopping or making their way home from work. "We would like to speak to anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area at around the time of the incident. Were you shopping in Fosse Park South, did you see a man running with a black ladies leather wrist bag? Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could help us with our enquiries." Police have been patrolling the Fosse Park area during the busy shopping periods to act as both a reassurance and a visible policing presence. PC Measures added: "This incident happened near the entrance to the brewery which is a quieter part of Fosse Park. We would urge people walking in more secluded areas at night, particularly if they have presents with them, to be more vigilant and perhaps carry personal attack alarms. "However, this is a time of year when opportunist thieves will take advantage and I would encourage everyone to be a little more careful when out and about getting gifts." Crime prevention advice can be found on this website under the Advice and Information section or by contacting your local policing unit Anyone with any information about this robbery is asked to contact PC * Please note, some mobile ‘phone service providers may charge for this call. Issued on 30/11/07 at 10:45 Sat Nav cloths combat car crimeSat Nav cloths combat car crime Police in South Leicestershire are helping motorists keep their Sat Navs secure by giving out free microfibre cloths to clean off tell-tale marks. The cloths will be available at the front enquiry offices of Blaby, Wigston, Hinckley and Market Harborough police stations. The microfibre cloths are used to clean off marks that are left by the Sat Nav cradle when it is removed from the windscreen. These marks can indicate to a thief that the device is still in the vehicle. Susan Willett, community initiatives co-ordinator for Blaby Local Policing Unit (LPU), said: "Satellite navigation kits are very attractive to thieves. Even if you take it out of view, the marks left may lead to the vehicle being broken into. "These cleaners are free and are available from Blaby, Wigston, Hinckley and Market Harborough police stations. "They are a very good way to prevent car crime and theft of Sat Navs. For more information about the Sat Nav cleaners please contact 8041 Susan Willett or 7315 Linda Spencer at Leicestershire Constabulary on Roadworks at various places around Meridian Business ParkThe Highways Department will be carrying out works at various places around Meridian Business Park including Meridian East and Meridian West, in order to install new raised kerbs at bus stops. Crackdown on under age alcohol sales. The Off Licence on Ayston Road has had it's Liceence amended following test purchases that took place during the Government sponsored Tackling Underage Sales of Alcohol Campaign (TUSAC) which ran for three months this summer. The licence has been amended to include conditions in relation to the removal of the current designated premises supervisor, promotion of the Challenge 21 policy, the installation of CCTV under the supervision of the police and further staff training in relation to the sale of alcohol. Sgt Sean Moore, the Force licensing officer said, “I think this case highlights the importance of those involved in the sale of alcohol to pursue a policy of demanding identification from anyone who appears to be under 21 years of age. None of the sales we have seen in test purchasing operations could have happened had they done so.” Braunstone Town Library Officially Launched on 29th September 2007On 29th September 2007, the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Councillor Mike Jones, officially opened the Braunstone Town Library.
Sam Maxwell – a year supporting the National Eczema Society (this article has been reproduced with the kind permission of the National Eczema Society)
(This article has been published with the kind consent of the National Eczema Society Magazine. For more information on the charity, please visit www.eczema.org) When Sam Maxwell became Braunstone Town Mayor on 11 May 2006, there was only one contender to be her charity of the year – the National Eczema Society! An event-packed and exhausting 12 months later, Sam has finally hung up her chains of office having raised an incredible £5,041. ‘I’d looked at what other Mayors had raised for their charity of the year and, because I work and have a family to look after, I set myself the goal of £3,000. When I exceeded that target with 5 months still left in office, I was delighted and I’m absolutely thrilled with the overall total.’ Sam’s decision to support the National Eczema Society was a result of seeing her 15-year-old daughter Eleanor battle with the condition from an early age. ‘Eleanor is our eldest child and she developed the first signs of eczema when she was 3 months old. It wasn’t especially bad at first – just a few patches – but around the time she started school it took hold with a vengeance.’ No one knew what had caused the sudden flare-up, but at times Eleanor was covered from head to toe in eczema and it wasn’t long before it became infected. ‘We got into a vicious cycle. The infection would start on her face and within a day her whole body would be covered. Antibiotics would clear it up but then, within a couple of days of completing the course, the infection would take hold again.’ By now, Eleanor’s eczema was having an impact on the whole family. ‘Treatment regimens were time-consuming and then there was the daily task of hoovering mattresses and curtains to reduce the house-dust-mite population, as well as the endless washing of bandages, bed linen and clothing – all of which contributed to there being less and less time for everybody else.’ Between the ages of 5 and 9, Eleanor’s eczema got steadily worse and she was an outpatient at her local dermatology unit until 13 years of age. ‘Her face was always really sore and she had cracks over her eyelids and around her neck. At first we’d see the consultant every few months but, when the eczema was at its worst, we’d be at the hospital every week for a check-up.’ As their family grew Sam contemplated the prospect of another of her children developing the condition. ‘Thankfully, none of our other daughters has eczema but I was always on the lookout for signs of it in the youngest three – Jenny, Julia and Katie – and, when any of them got heat rash, I’d wonder if it was evidence of eczema taking hold.”’ At the age of 8, Eleanor experienced such a severe infection that she was hospitalised for a whole week. ‘Although it didn’t appear that way at the time, getting admitted to hospital was really the best thing for Eleanor. The eczema was never quite as bad from then onwards as, following her stay, the hospital saw her more frequently and we got a really effective treatment regimen in place for her.’ Part of that regimen was tacrolimus ointment (Protopic), which dampens down the body’s immune system. At the time, this was a new treatment and Eleanor became one of the first children at the hospital to be given it. Protopic worked well for Eleanor and helped her finally regain control of her skin. Now 15, Eleanor continues to follow a strict regimen and her pots of cream go everywhere with her. Like many image-conscious teenagers though, she’s also keen to experiment with different looks and has discovered that her skin will tolerate make-up. ‘When Eleanor hit puberty her skin really began to improve. She still has active areas of eczema and her face and legs are particularly prone to flare-ups – especially when the seasons change, she’s stressed or is under the weather – but overall it’s under control.’ Bandages are now used on an occasional – rather than a daily – basis, and are applied to the back of Eleanor’s knees or the creases of her arms, while Protopic remains the main form of treatment during a flare-up. The National Eczema Society has played an important role in the family’s life for the past 10 years. ‘When Eleanor’s condition first deteriorated, a health visitor gave me some information leaflets on eczema and the Society. We immediately decided to join and it was one of the best decisions we ever made. ‘On a practical level, it was extremely useful as I gleaned handy hints and tips from the letters page and found mine wasn’t the only rubber washing machine seal to need replacing every 6 months because emollient had perished it! ‘It was also a comfort seeing others in the same situation and hearing how they coped while caring for a child with severe eczema. It was reassuring to know that we weren’t alone, and the research updates and treatment features also gave us hope that one day eczema would no longer be a part of our lives.’ It was the invaluable support of the National Eczema Society that led Sam to choose to raise money for the Society during her 12 months in office. ‘I hope that the money will enable the Society to continue to provide the information and support that made such a difference to our lives.’ Although Sam’s calendar of events has been bursting at the seams all year, three in particular stand out for her. ‘The psychic evening was a huge success, as there’d never been anything like it in the community before and it proved to be a huge hit. The two clairvoyants very kindly waived their fee for the show, so all the proceeds from the door went straight into the Charity of the Year fund. ‘A few weeks later we also held a very popular craft fair, where exhibitors paid to have a stand and visitors were charged a small entrance fee. Over 200 people came to browse the 35 stalls and we were overwhelmed by the support the event received. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and took advantage of the opportunity to buy friends and family something special for Christmas.’ While these two events raised the most money for the Society, one particular fundraiser stood out for Sam as being the most enjoyable – despite, ironically, being the smallest and most low key. ‘I decided to host a Body Shop party at our house, for friends and neighbours. It was great fun trying out all the products and my daughter made sure she was the recipient of the free makeover! Instead of the host getting a percentage of the takings to spend on goods, we agreed that they’d give me my commission in cash to put into the fund. They also organised a raffle, which raised some extra money, and the demonstrator also donated part of her commission.’ At the end of an enjoyable but tiring year of office, Sam has passed the title of Town Mayor on to her successor, but she still has a few words of advice for other fundraisers. ‘Network! The more events I attended and helped to organise, the more people got to know me and the more offers of help and support I received. One thing kept leading to another and the money just flooded in. ‘And remember – it doesn’t need to be a huge event to make money. Think about what your friends and family would enjoy as well as your local community and you’ll be half-way there.’ ![]() Former Town Mayor, Mrs Sam Maxwell Public Participation at all Council & Committee MeetingsBraunstone Town Council has decided to include a public particpation session at all of its meetings. Burglaries and theft of Cars (11/9/07)The Police have reported that access has been gained into houses that have been left insecure. Over the past week there have been two cars stolen by thieves entering insecure houses and stealing car keys. Crime Incident Report (30/08/07)Thousands of pounds worth of property stolen during burglary Police are appealing for public help following a burglary at a house in Braunstone Town in which thousands of pounds worth of property was stolen. The burglary happened sometime between 6pm on Wednesday August 22 and 7.30am on Thursday August 23 at a house on The Glade. A large amount of jewellery including earrings, pendants, rings and watches were stolen, along with designer sunglasses, a camcorder, digital camera and three mobile phones. Thieves also took dvds, cds, playstation games, cash and gift vouchers from inside the property and an Audi A6 was stolen from the drive. The car was recovered in the Thurmaston area on Saturday August 25. Also amongst the stolen property was a black Rigoutat oboe professional model, which has great sentimental value to its owners. The oboe was kept in a black leather case with royal blue lining and a red sticker that read "I'm a wind blower." Officers have been conducting house to house enquiries in the area but are keen to trace anyone else with information. PC Julie Watkins who is investigating the crime, said: "If you were in the area of The Glade overnight between Wednesday and Thursday last week please think back. Did you see or hear any activity? Perhaps you noticed the grey Audi A6 being driven away from the property? It is vitally important that we hear from you even if you think the information may be insignificant. Sometimes small details can prove key to police investigations. "We are also keen to trace anyone who may have been offered the distinctive oboe for sale. It has great sentimental value to its owners and they would be overjoyed to have it returned to them." Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 4282 Julie Watkins on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 4282. Incidents of theft from vehicles - press release from local Beat Officer, PC Simon O'Connell (29/01/07)Officers from Braunstone local policing unit are raising awareness of vehicle security following a spate of thefts from vehicles in the area. Over the past 31 days a total of 64 thefts from vehicles have been reported to police, mainly from the Thorpe Astley, Meridian and Braunstone Town areas. Items stolen include satellite navigation systems, car stereos and lap tops. Officers are increasing patrols of the area and are distributing leaflets containing crime reduction advice to homes. PC 1926 Simon O’Connell, neighbourhood officer for Thorpe Astley, said: “The majority of these incidents occurred during the evening and overnight and we are urging motorists not to leave anything on display in their vehicles which could attract a thief. “Sat navs in particular are very attractive to thieves and can be snatched from a car within seconds. If you have a sat nav always remove it from view, together with any leads and the cradle. Don’t leave it in the glove box or under the seat, as thieves know where to look! It’s a good idea to leave your glove box open to show prospective thieves that there is nothing inside. “Stereos are also sought after items as they are small and portable and can be traded for cash. Fit a removable stereo or one with a front that can be taken off and put it somewhere safe. ” Anyone wanting to report suspicious activity or who has information about vehicle crime should contact Leicestershire Constabulary on (0116) 222 2222.
